How to Overcome Fear of Failure and Launch Anyway
By Nonie White, Founder of AMotherbrand
It’s just over a year ago that everything changed in my business. I was on a retreat for women in business. During the first evening we had to go around the room and explain who we were and what we did. I was almost last to introduce myself. My palms were sweaty, I was tense and my stomach was tight.
When it got to me, I nervously explained what AMotherBrand was and what I was trying to do.
Only I hadn’t launched yet, so we clarified that I didn’t ‘really’ have a business at all yet, just an Instagram account!
I explained I’d had lengthy tech challenges, but I sensed my answer wasn’t satisfactory.
As the days passed at the Retreat, I was repeatedly asked what was stopping me from launching. I explained my son was still little and that I didn’t have much time – plus I had all these tech issues…Still, I got the feeling that nobody seemed satisfied with my answer.
On the final morning, I had my breakthrough.
Yes I didn’t have much time, this was entirely true. Yes I’d had a nightmare with developers – also true. But the real reason I hadn’t launched yet?
I was scared. What if I couldn’t do it?
Suddenly I was face-to-face with the fear of failure that had followed me through life to this point. It was this that was holding me back from pressing go. I didn’t need the tech to be perfect in order to launch, I’d just been telling myself I did.
I shared my breakthrough with the group and promptly burst into tears. It felt good to reach the conclusion that had clearly been so transparent to everyone else.
Now I knew what I was dealing with, I could address it.
Is this you?
If this sounds like you, know this is 100% totally normal! We were all brought up in an era where we were taught a ‘fixed mindset’ and learned to foster perfectionism and fear failure.
Mama – I’ve been there and I’m still working through it and trying to teach my children so they don’t have to do the same!
How did I combat the fear and launch AMotherBrand?
It took a lot of work and some time for me to get past this fear of failure that had been silently holding me back. So how did I do it?
I changed how I thought about my business
I had to learn to value my business and make working on it non-negotiable. I realised that I couldn’t expect anyone else to take my business seriously, if I wasn’t demonstrating that I was too.
I built a growth mindset
Rather than fearing failure, I had to learn to embrace failure as an opportunity for learning. Anytime I felt anxious about failing, I had to remind myself that our brains are malleable, we grow through learning and we learn through failing.
I changed who I spent my time with online and offline
If you do one thing, this might be the biggest game-changer. I had to intentionally build a supportive network of inspirational and like-minded entrepreneurs – starting with the women on my retreat.
Building a support network of like-minded people doesn’t happen overnight but I can’t emphasise enough how important this is. Intentionally surround yourself online (and IRL when possible) with the sort of people who are doing the sort of things you want for your own life. Once you’ve found your tribe you’ll feel at home, plus you will find yourself inspired, motivated, encouraged and supported.
They say that you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time but it’s actually bigger than this. The more you grow your immediate network of awesome people, the more you also grow your more distant (but also important & influential) social network too. Over time you’ll realise how valuable this is in terms of introductions.
I belong to a number of networks of like-minded entrepreneurs – including the wonderful AMotherBrand membership community. I surround myself either with people at a similar stage of their business journey or further ahead. These like-minded friends are essential to my success and wellbeing.
I got clear on my passions & strengths
I had to make sure my passions and strengths were always the primary focus in my business. When you’re using your passions and harnessing your strengths in your business, you’re much more likely to experience more flow, joy and fulfilment through your work as well as achieve more. It’s a win win!

I got clear business foundations in place
I needed to develop a strong plan of action to create a sustainable business. Things really started to change for me when I realised I couldn’t just wing it anymore, that to have a real business I needed to have a real plan in place, both practical and financial. I learned that these plans don’t have to be hefty and complex. Having a clear understanding of the mechanics and costs of my business and some basic financial projections make a massive difference to how I operate on a week to week, month to month basis. Knowing where I am and where I’m going helps me know exactly what I need to do next. When you’ve got scarce time to work, this focus is invaluable.
